It's much easier to act as if critics of Islam have a problem with Muslims as people than it is to accept the uncomfortable truth that Islam is different

Ahlam
What can we learn about
Islam from this woman?

"Discover the Truth's" Game

The Barbaric Murder
 of Umm Qirfa

From Discover the Truth:

The evidences shown, however barbaric it may seem, the woman was guilty of many heinous crimes.
(March 24, 2015)

What the Apologists Want You to Believe

"However barbaric it may seem" refers to an elderly woman being tied between two camels and pulled in two... so, yeah, it does seem barbaric.  Not to worry.  DTT assures us that she was deserving of her fate, having committed "heinous crimes"... or at least "being the leader" of those who did.

What They Offer as Proof

Two accounts are offered, each implying that the tribe to which Umm Qirfa belonged had ambushed a Muslim caravan and killed the defenders.  Interestingly, neither one states that Umm Qirfa played a role in the alleged ambush.

However, DTT also find a very salacious tidbit to bolster its argument: "Safi-Ur-Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri tells us that Umm Qirfa wanted to kill the Prophet."

Wow!  But who is Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mabarakpuri, you might ask?  A companion of Muhammad?  An early historian?

None of the above.  Lets just say that you can find Safi's photograph on the Internet.

What They Leave Out and Why They are Wrong

Even if the part about the prior ambush on a caravan is true (and there is better proof that it is not) this is not any different from what Muslims were doing to the Quraish, including the killing.  It is curious how doing to the Muslims what the Muslims were doing to others becomes a "heinous crime" in the mind of the true believer.

Unfortunately, the first account cited by DTT is from al-Waqidi, a notorious fabricator.  The second account is from Ibn Sa'd, who is known as the "scribe of al-Waqidi."  Given that no other evidence substantiates the story that a Muslim caravan was ambushed, it would appear that both accounts rely on the same fabrication.

On the other hand, the Muslim attack on Umm Qirfa's tribe, the Fazara, is found in the Hadith (Sahih Muslim 4345) but it says nothing about any ambush on a caravan allegedly preceding it.

The most reliable explanation comes from an earlier Sira:
Zayd also raided Wadi-l-Qurra where he met Banu Fazara and some of his companions were killed; he himself carried wounded from the field. Ward b. Amr b. Madash one of B. Sad b. Hudhayl was killed by one of B. Badr whose name Sa’d b. Hudhaym. When Zayd came he swore that he would use no ablution until he raided B. Fazara; and when he recovered from his wounds the apostle sent him against them with a force. He fought them in Wadi-al-Qura and killed some of them. Qays b. al-Musahhar al-Yamuri killed Mas’ada b. Hakama b. Malik b. Hudhayfa b. Badr and Umm Qirfa Fatima was taken prisoner. She was a very old woman, wife of Malik. Her daughter and Abdulla b. Mas’ada were also taken. Zaid ordered Qays b al-Musahhar to kill Umm Qirfa and he killed her cruelly. (Ibn Ishaq 980)
So, rather than a Muslim caravan being ambushed, the Muslims were actually on a raid - looking to steal and kill from others.  Apparently the Fazara did not care to be stolen from, and put up a stiff resistance.  When payback came around, Umm Qirfa was brutally pulled in two for the "heinous crime" of being married to the tribe's leader (her orphaned daughter was subsequently brought to Muhammad after having failed to escape, and presumably sold into sex slavery).

Finally, DTT's argument that Muhammad never ordered the method of execution makes a weak point.  While it may be technically true, neither is there evidence that he disapproved or disciplined the offender.  Compare this to Jesus's reaction after his follower cut off a soldier's ear (Matthew 26).
